We are looking for a Mainframe Support Lead to join our growing team in Atlanta, GA (2 days in office).

Job Summary:
The Mainframe Support Lead is responsible for overseeing the support, maintenance, of Mainframe Applications and Integrations. Engage in modernization of legacy mainframe systems.. This role requires hands-on experience in IBM Z/OS, COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, MQ, and batch processing, along with expertise in mainframe modernization strategies, including cloud migration, re-platforming, and API enablement. The ideal candidate will lead a team of mainframe support analysts, coordinate incident resolution, and drive the transformation of legacy applications to modern architectures.

 

Key Responsibilities:
Mainframe Support & Operations:

  • Provide Level 2/3 support for mainframe applications and infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve batch failures, performance issues, and production incidents.
  • Monitor system health, resource utilization, and job execution across Z/OS environments.
  • Ensure 24/7 system uptime, coordinating with cross-functional teams for issue resolution.
  • Identify Problems related to MQs, Lead Continuous Service Improvement Activities to improve the Efficiency of the Systems.
     

Incident, Problem & Change Management:

  • Oversee incident, problem, and change management following ITIL best practices.
  • Analyze recurring incidents and implement long-term fixes to improve system stability.
  • Manage disaster recovery (DR) and backup strategies for critical mainframe workloads.
  • Define SLA-driven support models to ensure efficient ticket resolution and root cause analysis.
     

Stakeholder Collaboration & Vendor Management:

  • Act as the primary point of contact between business, IT, and external vendors.
  • Partner with cloud providers and modernization service providers for mainframe transformation initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX, PCI, and other regulatory requirements for mainframe applications.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to senior management on mainframe performance and modernization progress.
     

Team Leadership & Knowledge Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of mainframe support analysts and developers.
  • Provide technical guidance, best practices, and hands-on support for mainframe issue resolution.
  • Conduct training sessions on mainframe support, monitoring tools, and modernization strategies.
  • Maintain documentation, knowledge bases, and runbooks for mainframe operations.

 

Mainframe Modernization & Transformation:

  • Lead initiatives to modernize mainframe applications, including rehosting, refactoring, or replatforming to cloud-based or hybrid architectures.
  • Develop APIs and microservices to integrate mainframe applications with modern platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, etc.).
  • Work with development teams on COBOL to Java/.NET migrations, leveraging API gateways, middleware, or mainframe DevOps tools.
  • Collaborate with architects to implement containerized mainframe applications using Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift.
  • Leverage AI/ML and automation tools to improve batch processing and job scheduling efficiencies.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in mainframe support and modernization.
  • Strong expertise in IBM Z/OS, COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM, MQ Series, and batch job scheduling (Control-M, CA-7, or equivalent).
  • Experience in mainframe modernization approaches, such as:
  • Replatforming (moving workloads to cloud or distributed systems)
  • Application refactoring (COBOL to Java, .NET, or microservices-based architectures)
  • Integration via APIs, RESTful web services, and middleware solutions
  • Mainframe DevOps (Git, Jenkins, Ansible, Zowe, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based mainframe solutions (AWS Mainframe Modernization, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Strong understanding of ITIL service management processes.
  • Experience with mainframe performance tuning and workload automation.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in IBM Z Mainframe, ITIL, or Cloud (AWS/Azure).
  • Experience with containerized mainframe workloads (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases and hybrid data architectures (DB2 modernization to PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.).
